the game being sort of referenced here is Metal Gear Solid's Psycho Mantis. in the game they know you are a player and not Snake, so they kind of fk about with your controllers input to the point where you had to switch controller ports in order to play and win. its a 2005 game (think first attempt of 3d rendering polygons polygons polygons), the other referenced can be attributed to a lot of other games since its a core concept of many many games.

the whole explorer mode thing is more to more recent games like sandbox.
